Meanwhile, the cyber crooks take the cash and run.ĬryptoLocker is billed as one of the most dangerous pieces of ransomware to appear, so what can you do to prevent it from infecting machines and, more importantly, not lose your precious data? The good news (thus far) is that if the victim pays the ransom, the files are actually decrypted, even though glitches with the decryption have been reported too. Encryption technology such as that used by CryptoLocker is specifically designed such that encrypted data cannot be recovered unless the required key is available, so if the creators behind CryptoLocker are really destroying the keys when the ransom is not paid, then the distinct possibility exists that the data is really lost forever – even if the authors of CryptoLocker are eventually caught. If payment is not made, the key is destroyed and those files are lost forever. If the money is paid before the timer is up, a key is supplied to decrypt the files. When you click on the attachment, CrypoLocker installs itself on your computer, takes a look at what you have on your hard drive (as well as mapped network drives), encrypts a variety of important file types such as photos and documents, and then begins its ‘negotiations’.Ī pop-up window with a 100-hour countdown begins and you’re given details how to pay the ransom, which typically ranges between $100 and $700. CryptoLocker’s raison d’être is to literally extract a ransom from its victims, which is why malware of its type is also known as “ransomware”.Īmong others, the malware is spread through emails purporting to be from some well-known brands, and there are reports that the malware could also come as an attachment in emails which look like voicemail messages, but which are obviously fake. The CryptoLocker Virus is a nasty piece of malware doing the rounds that encrypts files on a victim’s computer and issues an ultimatum: Pay up or lose your data. Casting aside the stereotyped aria form in favour of duets in which Verdi could more easily present the emotions of characters and deciding to write in the more expressive cantabile settings than the modified ternary of his youth, he worked to transform what was otherwise still grand opera into a form that held similar aesthetic ideals to the Gesamtkunstwerk of Wagner. While it is not true to say that the music of earlier opera was entirely disparate from the subject matter, they often would tread different paths with little regard for each other, and Verdi’s decisions to employ a greater sense of not necessarily word-painting, but emotional reflection in his music represents a movement towards greater musical realism in the middle of the 19th century.Īs Verdi grew older and began to experiment more with his musical language, his compositional style grew at greater odds against that of his predecessors, an experimental period stretching through most of his later life revealing explorations into harmonic complexity and structural freedom unseen before in Italian opera. A far more liberal use of orchestration is employed, Verdi choosing to push the orchestral accompaniment above the solo vocal line in the last few bars with crotchets in the flutes in an attempt to represent the emotion at play within the music. Nonetheless, the later date of the opera does yield some differences (although not apparent from the vocal score reproduced above). The extract above illustrates the influence of the Bel Canto operas on Verdi’s early writing clearly, the florid melodic lines and quite staid accompanying orchestra leaving a slightly jarring incongruity between the bitter subject matter and the elegant, if not care-free musical material. 1: An excerpt from “Anch’io dischiuso un giorno”, Act 2 Scene 1 of Verdi’s Nabucco This would change in Verdi’s later works, as he embraced a freer approach to form, but in his earlier operas, there is a deep sense of the all-permeating legacy of the Bel Canto operas on his compositional taste.įig. Again, the use of recitative without particularly much musical meaning is a reminder of the limits of the Bel Canto style, the abstracted music forcing the composer’s hand in writing sections to purely explain the plot, due to a lack of convention in doing so with the music in the arias instead. The presence of musical material quite emotionally detached from the subject matter at hand necessitated such structure, as indicators to an audience of pivotal moments in lieu of particularly engaging musical storytelling. The structural elements of the operas too echoed the works of his predecessors, Verdi largely maintaining a modified ternary form for his arias, typically preceded by a recitative to establish the dramatic situation. His early operas, Oberto (1839), Un giorno di regno (1840) and Nabucco (1842) in particular, show the hallmarks of the Bel Canto style, florid vocal lines matched with plots of mythic proportions or the mischief of higher society of an era somewhat passed. Partially due to the pure diversity of Verdi’s opera subjects, spanning Shakespearean comedy to dark melodrama, the musical language of his work his incredibly mixed, the composer selecting different tools of different origin to create cohesive dramatic works. That is not to say, however, that Verdi was quite the reformer of opera in the sense that Wagner was, indeed, many of Verdi’s works fall closely in line with early Italian and French grand opera, and the influence of the giants that came before him is distinctly present. In doing so, he often elected to retain elements of earlier opera, most noticeably in his opera subjects and adherence to form, while injecting new life into his work through a gripping sense of drama undeniable even to the most pessimistic of critics. Much like Wagner, Verdi is often perceived as a revolutionary of form, reinventing his art forms to better suit the times he was surrounded by. Rising out of the fading glory of Bel Canto opera came the works of Giuseppe Verdi, who would come to dominate the Italian operatic scene for decades until Puccini would be considered his successor in the latter parts of the 19th century. During the period in which Wagner had been revolutionising German operatic form, Italian opera had not remained stagnant entirely. While both a thesis and antithesis had been formed in the dialectical progression towards Puccini’s middle period operas, there are several remaining influences that need to be accounted for to explain how the musical language and operatic form of La Bohème came about in 1896. About twenty minutes after I give her the half-tablet, my cat starts scratching and/or licking hard at any fleas that are biting her. Flea bites are terrible under normal circumstances, and their "death bites" are worse. Some cats and dogs who have several fleas may experience sudden very hard bites in many areas of their bodies, which could account for the jumping around and panting. Unfortunately, when the fleas get the first whiff of gas, they respond by biting REALLY HARD in a reflexive reaction. It comes out as a gas through the pores of the skin, and acts on the fleas like cyanide gas acts on people. My vet explained to me that the chemical in Capstar isn't recognized by the animal's body - it just passes through without being absorbed and broken down. She weighs just 10 pounds, so I give her half a tablet (I cut them apart in a regular pill cutter) and any fleas she's picked up fall off and die. Works well for my cat - Apparently some cats and dogs respond badly to this medication, but it works wonderfully for my cat. Please let me have your babies immediately. Hours later, we were back home in my chemical smelling apartment and I haven't seen a flea since! Capstar, I love you. I gave my cat a bath with some flea shampoo so I could kill all the eggs and larvae. well, it was one of the greatest things I have ever witnessed. I have to admit, my life is very sad, because seeing those fleas die. It was awesome! I laughed maniacally and danced a little. They walked around with their gas induced soon-to-be-death hangovers and then died. They looked a little like when you wake up on your bathroom floor after a night of heavy drinking and the room is spinning and you are convinced that your head is going to explode within a matter of seconds. From reading the reviews, I knew that meant magic was happening! Sure enough, fleas were falling off of her. 30 minutes later, she was scratching herself like crazy. Believe me, I tried nearly everything before resorting to forceful insertion. I gave my cat one pill, and by give, I mean forced it down her throat while she screamed horribly and bit me. I grabbed the cat, the Capstar, and vacated. They did not, so I came on and sure enough, 20 dollars and one day later, Capstar arrived at my front door the very day of my extermination. I read about Capstar in many different "how to get rid of fleas" articles, so I called my vet and asked if they sold the product. (yes, with chemicals, sorry to the green people) I needed something, anything, to kill the fleas on her before bringing her back into my exterminated home. A week later, still finding fleas by the dozen on my poor cat, I had my apartment exterminated. I know I love wasting 80 dollars, I'm sure you do, too. It all started when I spotted a flea on my cat and the next day I was at my vet where they sold me 80 dollars worth of Frontline that appears to be doing absolutely nothing. Anyway, my indoor cat somehow ended up with fleas? Not exactly sure how? The Universe works in mysterious ways. Holy fleas, batman! it works! - I've got fleas. "The one you stole from me." The rasping voice replied. The Eavaling drew Haron close to him "Where is the princess?" It asked in a rasping voice. As it crept towards Haron, Haron stepped back, swinging his swords, one of the tentacles grabbed his right hand which held the sword, and twisted it, Haron groaned in pain, as the sword fell from his hand, he took out the dagger from the scabbard tied to his left thigh and tried to free his hand, but a second tentacle held his left hand. Haron's sword sliced through them, but fresh ones grew back. The Eavaling, as if in anticipation extended its tentacles. As Dante's lifeless body fell on the ground with a thud, Haron roared and charged at the Eavaling, drawing out his sword. The tentacles withdrew back to the hand they had emerged from. The tentacles crushed Dante as blood oozed from every pore of his body, his face turned blue and his eyes bulged out till they burst and streams of blood came out. Dante gasped as a tentacle circled around his throat. The moonlight fell on helpless Dante, struggling under the tentacle's grip. "Let Him go," he bellowed at the Eavaling. Haron watched them disappear in the darkness, before jumping from the roof. Ajinkya hugged Haron tightly and reluctantly followed Surya. "Come Ajinkya." Said Surya, tugging at the toddler's arm. "We are not leaving you,"Ajinkya said aghast at the idea. Take a right, walk straight for fifteen houses and take the left alley, walk straight and you will reach the exit, remember what I told you." He told the boy. "Listen boy, take your sister and go along the terraces. It seemed the tentacles were slowly crushing him as the Eavaling grew impatient. He peered hiding behind the parapet and saw Dante calling at the door of the house they had been hiding, the tentacles of the Eavaling holding him. Haron climbed over the parapet to the roof of the adjacent house on the left and crept towards the wall of the next house. The houses were built in such a way that they had an adjacent common wall. They moved to the open terrace and hunched on the ground crawling across the terrace. Haron stealthily picked up Ajinkya and moved towards the stone staircase that lead to the overhead quarters. "Haron, please come out." Dante's voice was desperate. Haron put his fingers on his lips signaling both the children to be quiet. "Haron, this is Dante, are you there?" It was indeed Dante's voice. Haron motioned Surya to move closer to him.Ījinkya was waking up too, as she opened her eyes Haron motioned her to keep quiet. Haron smiled at the boys optimism when a familiar chill made the hair on his nape stand up. "You are not going to die." Surya told him. Tell him I saved you from the thing I saw from below the floorboard." Haron spoke solemnly. There is a wine shop, you will find a man named Jorah, tell him Haron had sent you, tell him to do for you what he did for me. " If it comes back take your sister and get out of the marketplace. " I will tell them myself when I meet them," Haron said sadly. It had a fiery head unlike the ones he had seen before. He wondered how long he himself had before the Eavaling found them. Haron knew both Dante and Toshiba were dead. "Your friends, how will they know you are safe?" Asked Surya. He wondered what gave them strength to remain so unfazed. While Haron had nightmares every time he went to sleep even now. He was amazed at how the two had been unfazed by the creature. Haron was probably double the age of the boy when he had first seen the Eavaling. "Kshatriyas are not meant to grow tired." Surya replied turning to face Haron at last. "You don't grow tired?" He asked the boy. Today, the theory of continental drift has been replaced by the science of plate tectonics. Increasing difficulty keeps the pressure high, the soundtrack brings great energy, and I’d love to see what Alkemi’s got in store for the game’s future.Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. Loot nuances aside, I had a lot of fun battling the hordes. Overall:ĭrifting Lands scratched an itch I didn’t know I had, bringing the Dreamcast classic Armada to mind. Still, none of that breaks the fun of combat. I’d have loved to see cosmetic customizations: paint, armor shading, the like. The ship doesn’t visually change based on gear, which creates less attachment to the loot. The game battles that by letting you turn gear into blueprints, allowing you to essentially reroll, but the conversion is expensive. On the flip side, gear is only good when it’s useful, and many of the weapon types don’t feel viable. My favorite part about the loot are the flaws on high-ranking gear: maybe it’ll break when you auto-retreat? Maybe it decreases loot levels? Flaws keep any one item from feeling like a silver bullet. On one hand, there are tons of different equipment types: weapons, shields, CPUs to augment abilities. The lootĪ game like this comes down to the loot, and the results there are mixed. Once you’re navigating between flying mines, shooting spawning ships, and evading giant laser beams simultaneously, you’ll get what Drifting Lands is about. If you’re ever unsure whether you’ll make it out of a level alive, you can manually retreat to escape with the gear you’ve gathered. The game offers 10 stages of difficulty, and many enemies fire revenge bullets after death. Each level throws waves of enemies at you in varying patterns learning patterns and enemy types is critical. That said, combat is Drifting Lands’ bread-and-butter (all the food references), and combat feels good. Though you unlock the ability to use more skills over time, there’s not much incentive to change once you find a set you like. You’ll also equip two passive skills, though it feels more like one since Automatic Retreat, the passive that keeps you from losing your ship when you die, counts as a passive. In addition to hardware, you’ll equip special skills to help tackle enemies.Īctive skills range from temporary shields and health restoratives to damaging explosions and aerial mines. Some ships are slow and tanky, while others are quick and delicate. You start by choosing one of three ships, which functions as the game’s difficulty modifier. This means you’ve got a bullet-hell shooter mashed up with loot grinding, constantly improving your ship with new equipment. The formulaĭrifting Lands mixes the formulas of games like Ikaruga and Gradius with Diablo. Many loot grinders can fall into this trap, unfortunately.īut you’re probably here for the bullets and the flying and the loot grinding. Drifting Lands features diverse characters, which is a plus, but feels secondary to gameplay instead of complementary. Though your main character dialog feels flat, the story is more interesting than expected for a loot grinder. As the story unfolds you find yourself in the center of religious feuds, illegal smuggling, and more. You work as a mercenary, running scavenger missions to help support The Ark, but also taking on quests from others as well. You’re a pilot on The Ark, a last bastion of human survival. A complex loot system mixed with the hardcore action rewards risky behavior and keeps the tension high, even with some technical missteps.ĭrifting Lands takes place after a cataclysm destroys the world. Balancing the quest for better loot and the core gameplay takes a special touch though, and Alkemi’s Drifting Lands found it. For a while in the mid-2000s, the big trend was “RPG-elements.” Introducing experience points, leveling up, and increasing stats seems like an “easy” way to boost the life of any game. If you have the understanding necessary to make sense of the solo’s rhythms and harmony, then you can slow a solo down (or speed it up!) to adjust its level of difficulty. And, of course, you’ll be more likely to make mistakes. Otherwise you’ll wind up transcribing it mechanically and not learn very much. Go for something within your reach or just beyond it. Rather than try to give an explicit step-by-step method for transcribing, I’ll give a number of tips followed by an example of doing a transcription… Choose something appropriate to your level.ĭon’t transcribe something that’s harmonically or rhythmically well beyond your understanding. We also wind up reverse engineering the solo in the process, which gives us insights about what makes it tick. If we instead use our musical reasoning faculties to get the job done, we strengthen them… and these are of enormous use to us on the bandstand and off. But that’s not a skill that helps us much when we’re improvising on the bandstand. The “hunt and peck” approach makes use of one skill above all else: comparing pitch on a recording to a pitch played on an instrument. Or even just: The soloist seems to have reharmonized the heck out of this measure. The notes are in ascending groups of four, each group starting a little higher in pitch than the previous. The notes form a repeating pattern that modulates upward in minor thirds. The rhythm involves quarter note triplets. The pickup to the measure leads chromatically upward to the downbeat note. There is a flurry of notes that ends in a note falling solidly on beat three. The rest of the measure is a sequence of eighth notes. It requires that we peck away at a phrase not one note at a time but one insight at a time. This question is much more vague and open-ended than the first. The common approach has the student ask repeatedly, “what is the next note and where does it fall rhythmically?” A better question to ask over and over, and in increasing detail, is, “what’s going on in the upcoming notes?” It shouldn’t be how we transcribe either if our aim is to improve our playing. Luckily for patients, that’s not how doctors train. Unfortunately, that method won’t teach you to solo beautifully any more than you can learn to diagnose like a doctor by guessing at a patient’s problem until you get it right. Click To Tweet The “Hunt and Peck” approachĪ great many musicians use a sequential, trial-and-error method of transcription: guess at the pitch and rhythm of the next note, compare your guess to the recording, repeat until you get it right, then move on to the following note. They miss out on much of the potential benefit… Jazz musicians rave about the benefits of transcribing, but many squander those benefits. And, in the process, to gradually assimilate that understanding into your own improvisation. It is to deepen your understanding the music and all the artistic “decisions” that went into its creation. The point of transcription as a learning tool is not simply to arrive at the right notes. But, judging from the students I see, precious little attention is given to the process of transcription. Transcribing solos from recordings is widely regarded as one of the best ways of improving your jazz ability. |
